The existing, single-story building of the Graz Neuhart Elementary School extends in an L-shape along the eastern side of the property. With an extension to accommodate 16 classrooms, the design completes the existing structure, creating a cohesive ensemble.

Following the logic of the existing building, it is augmented with another L-shaped extension, ensuring optimal natural light in all rooms of both the old and new sections. Simultaneously, a quiet schoolyard, protected from Kärntner Straße, is created, along with a spacious, sheltered entrance plaza for the school.

The open ground floor forms the single-story connecting link between the existing building and the extension, which provides a counterpoint to the existing structure and forms the western boundary of the courtyard. The contrast between old and new is thus noticeable not only in the schoolyard but also upon entering the building through the newly created entrance area.

The assembly hall is easily accessible from both parts of the building and opens onto the playground through generous glazing. This playground extends via steps to the roof garden (outdoor classroom) on the first floor between the existing building and the extension.

The afternoon care facility, oriented on both sides of the building, benefits from access to the school courtyard and sports fields on the ground floor, while on the first floor, the teachers' rooms and workshops are directly connected to the roof garden. The two upper floors accommodate the two clusters, each with four classrooms and their associated ancillary rooms.

The structure is planned as a hybrid construction of reinforced concrete and timber. The facades will feature a curtain wall of wood, while the ground floor, with its generous glazing, will remain open and permeable.
